Biked to school today, super shady experience, crutches on my back and all. Also one of my shoes and brand new and one is worn it out, looks funny. Team OK - Episode #2 and #3

The amount of sandy step up riding in Kelowna is a little bit much. These days all the riders are learning new tricks, not bike control. It's perfectly fine for most riders that have ridden for a couple of years and have developed the skill of bike control, but it seems to have an effect on all the new riders. Making them think trying a trick on a step up is what its all about. And then once you show up to a competition, you cant make it threw the line or trick the jumps. Over all the step up has done you little good. Its just a nice confidence booster for trying it on the real jump because of the less chance of injury. You still need to try your trick in a pack of jumps

I saw a quote on Facebook and thought it was perfect for this. "Doesn't understand how kids would rather learn tricks before learning to ride a set of jumps. It's like, learning to dunk.. before you learn how to dribble or shoot. Yeah dunks are cool, but when it gets down to it.. you suck at basketball." - Wink Grant

There is really nothing wrong with a trick step up, its just that you need a good balance of everything. Thats why for the next Team OK episode were not going to film dirt jumping, change it up a little bit with some downhill trail riding. Anyway, here is another step up edit of the Dreamland step up! Well I've hit the 6 week mark on my road the healing, half way until I start physio. I went to the doctors the other day expecting a robo boot, but when I left I just had a new Cast. I get this cast off in 4 weeks and then a robo boot for 2 more weeks. Then I will start walking freely. The Doctor also hopes that I can even snowboard before Christmas. Also I won't be able to do dry land tramp training with my snowboard team, I got a long fall ahead of my self...

2010 Season Wrap Up!

My 2010 season was a rough one, many ups and downs. Injury after injury led to a relativity short season for me. I might I have spent more riding days off the bike then on because of this, but for the periods of time that I did ride, It was unreal. From photo shoots to competitions to whistler trips, my 2010 season was filled with excitement and pain

The riding season in Kelowna started really early this year with a warm winter, We were riding on my birthday! Which was always a dream to have a jump jam for my birthday, but it's in February so that wouldn't happen, but this year it did! One of the many highlights of the year! My mom did a BBQ and Cake! I think about 30 people showed up to the Birthday Jump Jam! Dustin Greenall (Banshee) had just moved to Kelowna so he was there enjoying the day, but then he proposed an idea of a monster jump. Next thing I know there's a gravel pit loader driving down the road thanks to Benton Leong (Kona) and a 8 foot tall lip in a boat trailer thanks to Garrett Robertson (Sun Country Cycle) and Matt Gretzinger! The next weekend Bryce Piwek came up to Kelowna to shoot for Dustin and Casey Groves (Transition). Here is a great shoot of me on the big jump!

The beginning of the season was going great for me, already back to where I was from the previous year. Until I had a bad snowboarding crash and wound up with a major concussion. I was out of riding for 3 weeks. Luckily I was going to mexico the next week so I wasn't tempted to do anything until after that. While I was out with my concussion Dustin and Casey Started to rebuild my house. One night we brought down the loader again and made the piles for our landings. They built a wooden drop in ramp and box. After that it was time for the small machinery thanks to Matt Gretzinger and Winn Rentals. We used a small excavator and bobcat to clean up my yard and shape landings. After a weekend of building with those we were ready to ride! The jumps were great and super fun! Thanks to everyone for the help!

When I got back from Mexico, Dreamland had been started. I was home for only about 20 minutes before I rode up to the new jumps. Wow, they were massive! I only had 2 days to ride them before A snowboard competition. Unfortunately I couldn't attend Dustin and Brandon Haywards (Banshee) Birthday Jump Jam at Dreamland! But all I heard was good things! After a solid couple weeks of riding at dreamland, I made another mistake. Pop'd weird on a inward shoulder buzzer off the 3rd hip jump and landed nose heavy. My feet flew off and I rode down the landing on my seat until finally getting squirrly enough to flip over and hit my head. Lights out for me. When I woke up and I had no idea where I was. I continued to tell Dustin how cool the jumps looked and that I've dreamt about the place. When we pulled into my yard, same thing, could not believe how fun the jumps looked like! I thought it was all fake so I was bummed that I would never get to ride these jumps. I was done riding for a month.

It was a month till I was back on the bike with my new Troy Lee D2, my full time helmet. The next big event was Goat Style. Everyone was talking about how big the jumps were and getting stoked on it the week before. And to be honest the jumps were smaller than the ones we had been training on the previous week. It took a long time to get used to coarse. I didn't even get the run I wanted all weekend. I was invited to the Red Bull Friday Night Lights Jam. Which was super fun but I had a bad night. All the pro's through down first run so I knew had to do something. I just went for a 360, but the jump had been changed alot since I had previously ridden and this was my first run. I got a little bit sketchy and had a minor injury. So the rest of the night I did a couple more runs and watched the pro's throw down!

The next day was qualifying. I think we only got one run of practice and then had to put a run together. I knew what was enough and qualified 2nd. The rest of the day at Goat Style is always fun just chilling with friends from out of town. The next day was finals and luckily we had some practice. I watched one of my friends Jeremy Hayward get worked on a under rotated flip off the whale tail and got a little shaken up. He was taken away by ambulance. Always hard to watch a bro go down like that. I rode my first run. Absolutely nothing like I wanted. Even Casey Groves came up to me after and said "Harry that run wasn't you, Jaywards crash was brutal but you just got to focus, things like this happen in this sport" I then repeated to him "I'm spinning the first drop." I had never spun a drop or step down before. I also didn't tell anyone that I was going to do it. At the top I took some deep breaths and then dropped in. 360 the first drop perfect. I was stoked. When I came around the next corner all my friends were sitting under the Red Bull tent screaming with excitement. A few of them even chased me down the coarse. I finished my run off with a tuck no hander off the whale tail, Dump 360 the last jump and a T-Bog air in the quarter. I finished 2nd to Anthony Messere and was super stoked on the whole weekend

After Goat Style was Whistler, always a summer highlight. The last 3 summer's I went to whistler I ended up in the hospital. Luckily this time I didn't! It was probably the best week of my life. I went up with my cousins family and my aunt found a awesome deal at the Pan Pacific so we were fortunate enough to stay there, Wow that was a nice place. Wake up every morning and go look at the mountain outside the windows. We ended up doing 5 days of bike park! It was a dream come true! While I was there I rode tons with local Dennis Langenstam at the dirt jumps and skate park each night. Also I got to opportunity to shoot with Laurence CE multiple things which was awesome! He really knows what's what behind the lense! We shot dirt jumps, slope style coarse and even skate park late one night! I don't think I could have changed anything to make it better. Huge shoot out to my cousin's, aunt and uncle for bringing me along! Here is some highlight photos...

After Whistler was over I just rode around town and a couple highlight nights and the new Kelowna Bike Park! Those jumps are extremely fun to fool around on the small ones transferring from line to line. On August long weekend, It was Kelowna's Center of Gravity. The first day I didn't go because of the price and I just stayed and worked on my bikes. That night Paul and Nick Genovese had just come into town on there way back from Whistler. We rode for about an hour, took a brake then came back and Nick pulled out the camera. I knew it was time to get on point then. Paul asked me to 360 the last jump when I told him a never had. I decided since we were filming with Nick I should just man up and do it. Nick wasn't even filming that jump at the time, but I went for it. I pulled off weird and landed 270, put my foot down and flipped over. Sharp pain
immediately entered my foot, I knew it was bad. I knew I had broken my foot. And worse than last year...

I went to the hospital that night and the doctor had a look at my foot and said "Wow this is bad" So I had X-rays and he couldn't find anything wrong with my foot. The next day a specialist looked at my foot and couldn't find anything either. At this point my hopes were up. The went to a familys cabin and atv'd all weekend. The day we got back I had another appointment. The foot specialist looked at my same x ray, found a few brakes and then a shattering in one of the bones! He said it was really bad. So the next day I had CT scans. The doctors concluded I had shattered my navicular bone in my foot into over 30 pieces. I was done for the season.

Me and my mom had planned a 2 week riding trip that was now cancelled. We still went up to Whistler for the final Crankworx weekend just to hang out with friends and watch the slope style. It was awesome to watch Casey come 3rd and Sam Deuck (Norco) come 4th. Two riders that I know. Congrats to all the winners! And that concludes my 2010 season! What can you say, its a dangerous sport! For 2010 I decided to try out a Transition Trail or Park, Wow am I speechless. This bike feels unreal, the geometry is spot on, I could not give Transition any way to change it. It’s an affordable price so I recommend you try one out. I am also running the Race Face atlas bars, which feel great. On top of that I have a 2010 Fox 32 831. Team OK - Episode #1

After a very successful short movie last fall, Team OK will start to be doing a series of webisodes. These webisodes will be able to show viewers our progression throughout the year. This current episode shows us training for the major competition of the year, Goat Style. Most of the Kelowna riding seen will be taking place at Goat Style this year! Going to super fun!

The short 30 minute may be done again this year, but you'll just have to wait and see. In the episode we ride Kicking Dirt (My yard) and the new trick step up at Dreamland. Thanks to Dustin Greenall (Banshee/Manitou) the Kelowna riding level has exploded, the jumps we have been riding are massive. You'll just have to wait to see those in a future episode though. I have a feeling that Kelowna kids will through down at Goat Style, maybe our rep will change from crappy tucks and back flips? We will have to wait and see.

Team OK will be edited and produced by Kicking Productions again this year. It seems that we have been shooting with multiple camera's this year instead of just one. In this episode you will get to see some crazy trick attempts from Brandon Hayward (Banshee), also some difficult tricks from Aubrey Leitz (Rocky MTN) and also just the rest of the crew throwing down, so here is "Team OK Episode 1".

After lots of anticipation and waiting, My 2010 Transition Trail or Park showed up, I was so excited! The next day I got it into Cyclepath Kelowna so that they could start to build it up. After the main things were done, I came home and me and Casey Groves (Transition) tried to finish it. When we were almost done I realized I had left some brake adapter bolts at Cyclepath! Luckily Casey had some so he brought them the next day. We got my bike finished up!

I can not believe how great a well built hard tail is! So light and fun, Can't wait to learn some new tricks. I also am waiting on the 2010 Double as well, I will do a full bike check soon with both bikes and let you guys know how they ride, but from my past riding on the Transition's, nothing is wrong! Bikes fell amazing!

Back in the Saddle Again!

Well, after my second concussion this year, I'm back it! Got myself a new Troy lee full face to protect the skull too. Anyway, can't believe how fun it is to ride again! Jarrett Moore (Rocky Mtn) came up for the weekend and killed it! Such a nice guy. I have seem to already get my riding back to the usual. Stoked on that. We built the most legit trick step up ever. Strait up hucking. Working on Tail-whips and 3 inwards. Heres a pic of the huckfest

The wind on saturday was a drag and kinda killed the mood on saturday because Dreamland is wide open. We decided to try my place out because we have a bit of shelter. Seemed to work. We rode a bit then made some KD and hot dogs. Seemed to be the lunch of the weekend. Well thats it for now, raining here in Kelowna. Mega Bonus! Heres a pic of me and my house

Harrison Mendel Injury #2

After getting home from Mexico, within an hour I was up at the new jumps digging and riding. Funniest jumps I've ridden thanks to Dustin Greenall. Basically thats all I had been doing for the last week was digging and riding. So much fun, Considering I had just come off a Concussion. Saturday was amazing, a lot of people and some good times. Casey had just invited me to go to Tamas Forde's Brighter, and Casey and filmed part of his segment at my house. There was a couple more shoots I wanted including an Inward buzzer on one of the hips, a awkward trick, but I had been doing it all morning.

So I ask Kai Wendt to shoot it for me and I hiked to the top, thats all I remember. I had knocked myself out on that trick, second concussion in 6 weeks. According to Casey and Dustin I was super confused. Dustin asked me where I was, I said I've dreamt about this place, and then he tells me this place is called Dreamland. He was nice enough to drive me home, there I procceced to tell him how cool the jumps look, Including my yard. Also I was yelling at him because he was trying to convince me I just had a head injury (which I did). I cracked my helmet all over. Then I started pucking 4 hours later. Me and my mom decided I should go to the Hospital to make sure I was okay. I'm okay I just can ride for a month, considering I just smashed my head. This means no Ranchstyle for me! Well after 2 weeks of digging almost everyday, my yard is semi finished. We still have to change a couple things at the bottom. The top is finished and is so fun and flowy. Dustin Greenall (Banshee) and Casey Groves (Transition) have been a big help during this whole process along with Benton Leong (Kona) who got us a loader and Matt Gretzinger who got us a Bobcat and Mini excavator! I am so stoked on how everything is working out. Anyway I'm just getting off a concussion and pneumonia so I'm trying to take it easy. I had a few people over on saturday and we made a little edit. So many close trains!

Well this last saturday was my 14th Birthday, and It was sunny. So I got my brain thinking, Let's ride bikes. After a quick Facebook email we got a 25 people coming. So stoked, I almost forgot about my Birthday, I was stoked to ride with all the bro's. At about 10 everyone started pilling in. It was amazing. My mom was kind enough to make us all burgers and cake! I was speechless. Then after that some Photographers started showing up and everyone new it was game time. It is also really nice now that Dustin Greenall is living in Kelowna because he is an amazing builder and knows how to run a machine well. After and amazing day of riding,

Dustin and Casey proposed the idea of a new huge jump. 30 mintues latter a huge loader was driving down the street along with a 8 foot wood lip on a boat trailer. I know I was getting myself into trouble, the good trouble thought. So after we set the jump in place we had a 8 foot lip, 15 foot gap to a 12 foot high landing thats massive. So we started hucking on that, I'm pretty sure nothing was landed. Anyway this jump is going to be amazing for practicing on and I have already been riding it lot's. Today I was getting some bigger tricks on it and went for my 360 and now I have some torn cartilage in my knee! Fun stuff
Anyway it was probably the best way possible to spend my Birthday, thanks to everyone who showed up also everyone that made it possible.

February Update

Well, the past month has been soo fun! Im super excited that the Biking Season is starting early. Its really nice to be able to snowboard and bike at the same time. About 2 weeks ago, me and about 20 other people were riding the Westside's popular Sand Pit Trick jump. Second hit of the year I 360'd. Stoked on that. The next weekend me and my snowboard team traveled to Red Mountain for a Board Cross Competetion. First run on friday I could tell that the weekend would be awesome. I ended up with a 4th on Saturday and 2nd on Sunday! This out of about 30 15 and under kids!

Today I rode Casey Groves new step downs. Super fun! Its also nice to have Dustin Greenall now living in Kelowna! Welcome! This weekend is my birthday and I'm having an invitational Jam! Should be really fun! Hopefully I can get some pictures and videos and Ill make another post.

Let me tell you. I have worked with very few photographers but I can tell that Mike Kirk is one of the best. He is a fellow rider and knows what a good shot is. He also lets you do what you want, doesn't force tricks or angles. It just comes. This year he got an external flash, and let me tell you, his 2010 shots are going to unbelievable. He has his own website and if you read you will see he was a pretty neat challenge for him self in 2010

Well I'm super stoked to be riding for Transition again this year. Transition is forsure the best company I have ever delt with. One of the only companys that you get to go the main factory, meet the owners and much more. For 2010 I really dont know what bikes to ride. Okay well

Brandon Hayward is going pro. He will deny it but trust me, he is. For this season he is riding for Banshee, Wellgo, Halo, X - Fusion, Kelowna Cycle and I'm sure there's more. I have been riding with Brandon this past season and he is rowdy! And extremely well known in B.C. Just wanted to wish this kid luck and we will be cheering for you cause you'll probably destroy every comp this year!
